Periodontal Treatment

GET IN TOUCH

There’s more to your smile than just your teeth.

The jawbone and gums that support your teeth are just as important to your oral health, and periodontics is the specialist area of dentistry focused on caring for your smile’s foundation.

Several factors affect the health of your gums and jaws. Just like your teeth, a build-up of plaque bacteria will cause harm. If you have diabetes, are a smoker, suffer from stress or have a cardiovascular condition, you’re also at greater risk of developing gum problems.

Periodontal disease starts as inflammation in the gums but can progress, causing serious damage to the underlying bone tissue.

At Kissdental, periodontal treatments are led by Dr Alberto Li Greci who offers a range of periodontal treatments that reduce the risk of gum disease whilst preventing bone loss.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

In our day-to-day dental routine, it’s easy to simply focus on fighting tooth decay. When you neglect your gums, you’re putting yourself at risk of gingivitis and periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is a dental infection affecting the gums and jaw bone. The infection starts as gingivitis, which causes sore, inflamed, and bleeding gums. You might see blood spots on your toothbrush, and your gums may appear brighter than usual. Gingivitis is easily treated by improving dental hygiene.

Untreated, gingivitis will become periodontitis. If you develop this more serious infection, the plaque that irritates your gums spreads down the gum margin toward the roots of your teeth. As this happens, pockets form between your teeth and gums, causing them to loosen. As bacteria penetrate deeper, your jawbone deteriorates, releasing the loose teeth.

Treating Gum Disease

It’s sometimes difficult to spot the early signs of gum disease. We’ll also look at the health of your gums during your regular dental checkups. However, if you’ve noticed a change in your gums, you should make an appointment to see Dr Li Greci and the Kissdental team.

We’ll assess your gums during your initial consultation and look for inflammation and bleeding. X-rays will help us get a clear picture of the underlying structure. To determine the extent of the disease, we’ll need to measure the depth of the periodontal pockets. Pockets wider than 4mm require treatment.

Dr Li Greci uses the latest in microscopy, dental lasers and molecular biological tools to carry out advanced endodontic assessment and treatment. He may recommend professional cleaning to remove any plaque below the gumline or root planing, which smooths the surface of the roots of your teeth to remove bacteria. More advanced periodontal disease may require minor surgical treatments like gum or bone grafts to restore damaged tissue.

However we treat your gums, we’ll always support you by discussing care techniques that prevent future problems— and you can be sure that perio treatment from Dr Li Greci and the Kissdental team will set you up for years of healthy smiles!
