You’ve invested in a beautiful new smile with veneers from our team at Kiss Dental, and we want to help you keep them looking pristine for years to come. Whether you’ve chosen porcelain or composite veneers, proper aftercare is essential to protect your investment and maintain that stunning appearance you’ve worked hard to achieve.
At our practice locations across Manchester City Centre, Altrincham, Flixton, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Liverpool, Bury, and Bramhall, we’ve guided hundreds of patients through the veneer journey. Our founder, Dr Kailesh Solanki, and our team, including Dr Khushal Morar, want to ensure you get the most from your new smile. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about caring for your veneers.
The days immediately following your veneer placement are essential. Your veneers have just been bonded to your teeth using a special adhesive, and this material needs time to set properly. We recommend you avoid eating or drinking anything hot for the first 24 hours after your appointment.
It’s also worth noting that your bite might feel slightly different at first. This is completely normal. Your teeth have a new surface, and your mouth needs time to adjust. If you’re experiencing any significant discomfort or your bite feels genuinely off, don’t hesitate to ring us on 0161 524 1804. We’d rather hear from you early so we can make any necessary adjustments.
You may notice some minor sensitivity around the gum line during the first few days. This typically settles quickly, but if it persists beyond a week, please get in touch with our team.
Veneers don’t require any special cleaning products or techniques—in fact, we recommend keeping things simple. Here’s what we suggest:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush twice daily, just as you would with natural teeth. Gentle, circular motions are best—avoid aggressive scrubbing, particularly along the gum line where the veneer meets your tooth. You can use regular fluoride toothpaste, but avoid highly abrasive whitening pastes, as these can dull the surface of your veneers over time.
Floss daily to keep the areas between your teeth and beneath your gums healthy. When flossing around your veneers, be gentle and avoid snapping the floss against the veneers themselves. Slide it carefully between your teeth in a gentle sawing motion.
A daily alcohol-free mouthwash is a great addition to your routine. It helps maintain oral hygiene and keeps your breath fresh. Just steer clear of any mouthwashes containing alcohol, as these can potentially affect the bonding material over time.
One of the biggest threats to your veneers isn’t structural—it’s staining. Whilst porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant compared to natural tooth enamel, composite veneers can be more susceptible to discolouration. Here are the main culprits you should be aware of:
Highly pigmented foods and drinks: Red wine, dark coffee, strong tea, beetroot, tomato-based sauces, curries, and dark berries can all stain your veneers over time. It’s not that you can never enjoy these things again—just be mindful and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
Acidic foods and drinks: Citrus fruits, fizzy drinks (including diet versions), and vinegars can weaken the bonding material and potentially cause erosion. Don’t eliminate these from your diet entirely, but do limit consumption and always rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
Hard and sticky foods: Avoid biting directly into hard foods like nuts, boiled sweets, or hard toffees. Don’t use your teeth as tools to open bottles or tear packaging. If you’re a fan of sticky foods like toffee or chewing gum, it’s best to avoid these altogether, as they can dislodge veneers.
Hot foods: Extremely hot foods and drinks can occasionally weaken the bonding material, particularly in the first few weeks after placement. Let hot food cool to a comfortable temperature before eating.
Many patients find that using a reusable straw when drinking staining beverages helps protect their veneers. It’s a simple habit that can make a real difference over time.
We know it’s tempting to bite open a packet or remove a bottle top with your teeth—but please resist! Veneers are strong, but they’re not designed for this kind of impact. Using your teeth as tools is one of the most common ways veneers become damaged.
If you participate in contact sports like rugby, boxing, or martial arts, we strongly recommend wearing a custom-made mouthguard. This will protect your veneers from impact damage. Ring us if you’d like to discuss options for a sports mouthguard.
If you grind or clench your teeth at night—a condition we call bruxism—this can cause significant damage to veneers. The repeated pressure and friction can lead to cracking, chipping, or the veneer becoming loose.
If you think you might be grinding your teeth (signs include a sore jaw or worn teeth), please mention this at your next appointment. We can fit you with a custom night guard that’ll protect both your veneers and your underlying teeth whilst you sleep. This is genuinely one of the best investments you can make if you’re a grinder.
We offer both porcelain and composite veneers at Kiss Dental, and whilst the care is broadly similar, there are some key differences worth understanding.
Porcelain is incredibly durable and highly resistant to staining. These veneers are extremely strong and, with proper care, typically last 10–15 years or even longer. Because of their strength, you don’t need to baby them quite as much as composite veneers. However, they can chip or crack if subjected to significant impact.
The main advantage of porcelain is that they maintain their appearance exceptionally well. Even if you’re a coffee devotee or red wine enthusiast, your porcelain veneers will stay bright and white.
Composite veneers are a fantastic option if you’re looking for an affordable way to transform your smile. They’re made from a tooth-coloured resin material that’s bonded directly to your teeth. Whilst they’re still durable, they’re somewhat softer than porcelain and more susceptible to staining and surface scratching.
With composite veneers, we’d recommend being a bit more cautious with staining foods and drinks. The good news? If a composite veneer does become stained or damaged, it’s often straightforward and more affordable to repair or replace.
Composite veneers typically last 5–7 years with proper care, though many patients enjoy theirs for longer.
Regular check-ups are part of looking after your veneers properly. We recommend you visit us every six months for a routine examination and professional clean. During these appointments, we’ll check that your veneers are secure and spot any early signs of wear.
However, don’t wait for your six-month appointment if you notice any of the following:
If you experience any of these issues, ring us straight away on 0161 524 1804. We’re happy to fit you in for an emergency appointment if needed. The sooner we address any problems, the easier they are to fix.
With proper care, your veneers will serve you brilliantly for many years. But eventually, they will need replacing—that’s just the nature of dental work. The process is actually quite straightforward.
When the time comes, we’ll gently remove your existing veneers using specialised instruments. Your underlying tooth is usually undamaged, and we’ll prepare it once again for your new veneer. Placing a new veneer follows exactly the same process as your original placement.
The cost of replacement varies depending on whether you choose porcelain or composite veneers. If you’d like to understand the costs involved, our fees page has detailed pricing information, or you can call us to discuss flexible finance options.
With excellent aftercare, you can expect your veneers to last:
These timescales assume you’re following proper care guidelines, attending regular check-ups, and protecting your veneers from damage. Some patients’ veneers last even longer—we’ve had patients enjoying their porcelain veneers for over 20 years.
The biggest factors that affect longevity are how well you care for them at home, whether you grind your teeth, and how much staining they’re exposed to.
If you’d like to enhance your veneers further or address other aspects of your smile, our team offers a range of complementary treatments. If your veneers haven’t covered your entire smile, you might consider professional teeth whitening for your remaining natural teeth. We also offer cosmetic bonding if you’d like to make adjustments to other teeth.
During your regular appointments, Dr Kailesh Solanki and Dr Khushal Morar are always happy to discuss options for enhancing your results further.
Yes, absolutely. You can eat almost everything, but just be mindful of the guidelines we’ve covered—avoid using your teeth as tools, don’t bite down hard on extremely hard foods, and be cautious with very hot foods in the first week or so. Most patients find it takes just a few days to adjust.
After a few days, most people forget they have veneers at all. They feel remarkably natural. Your bite might feel slightly different initially, but this sensation typically disappears within days as your mouth adjusts.
Ring us immediately on 0161 524 1804. Depending on the damage, we can often repair it rather than replacing the entire veneer. For composite veneers, a repair is usually straightforward. For porcelain, we may recommend a replacement, but we’ll discuss your options with you first.
Porcelain veneers are incredibly stain-resistant and won’t discolour the way natural teeth can. Composite veneers are more prone to staining, particularly if exposed to a lot of staining foods and drinks. Regular professional cleaning helps maintain their brightness.
If you’re not aware of grinding or clenching, you probably don’t need one. However, if you wake with a sore jaw, notice your teeth are worn, or your partner has mentioned you grind at night, we’d definitely recommend getting a custom night guard. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to protect your investment.
We recommend six-monthly check-ups for veneer patients. Regular appointments allow us to monitor your veneers and catch any issues early. Of course, if you have any concerns between appointments, don’t wait—get in touch straight away.
Porcelain veneers don’t typically discolour with professional whitening products because the stain is usually on the surface. However, they can’t be whitened in the same way natural teeth can. If your veneers do become discoloured, we might recommend replacing them. For composite veneers, minor discolouration can sometimes be polished away.
A slightly different bite feeling is normal for the first few days. However, if it feels genuinely uncomfortable or wrong after a week, please contact us. We can make adjustments to ensure your bite is perfect.
You don’t need to avoid any foods permanently, but it’s wise to be cautious with very hard foods (like bones or nut shells), very sticky foods (like toffee), and heavily staining foods if you have composite veneers. With sensible choices, you’ll keep your veneers looking beautiful for years.
If you’re considering veneers but haven’t taken the leap yet, our team would love to help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. We offer both porcelain and composite options, with flexible finance arrangements to suit different budgets.
