Want whiter teeth? Brilliant. You’re not alone—teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments we see at Kiss Dental, and for good reason. A brighter smile genuinely does affect how you feel about yourself. But here’s the thing: not all whitening is created equal. We’re going to walk you through what actually works, what’ll drain your bank account, and why some methods get results while others don’t.
Whether you’re looking at professional whitening in Manchester or considering what you can do at home, this guide covers everything you need to know.
The whitening products you buy on the high street? They’re weaker. Much weaker. UK regulations limit the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in over-the-counter products to 0.1%—and honestly, that’s why results are so disappointing. You brush, you wait, you check the mirror. Nothing.
Professional whitening uses peroxide concentrations of 15–35%, depending on the system. That’s 150–350 times stronger. And that’s why it actually works.
At Kiss Dental, we work with two gold-standard systems: Zoom whitening and Enlighten whitening. Both are clinically proven. Both deliver results you’ll notice immediately. And both are applied by dentists who know exactly what they’re doing—which means your teeth stay safe.
In-chair whitening happens in our practices across Manchester, Altrincham, Flixton, Knutsford, and Alderley Edge. You sit back, we protect your gums with a barrier, and we apply professional-grade whitening gel to your front teeth. Then we use a light to activate it.
Zoom whitening takes about 45 minutes. You’ll see results during that appointment—sometimes teeth lighten by 6–8 shades in a single session. It’s brilliant for people with weddings, events, or anyone who wants instant transformation. Dr Khushal Morar, our cosmetic specialist, often recommends Zoom when patients need results now.
Enlighten whitening is different. It’s a hybrid system that combines professional in-chair treatment with custom take-home trays for follow-up. The full programme takes about two weeks, but results are more consistent—and more dramatic—than Zoom alone. You’ll typically see 16+ shades of whitening. The downside? It’s not instant.
Which one’s right for you? If you want immediate results and don’t mind a slightly faster fade, Zoom wins. If you want the best possible results and you’re willing to wait, Enlighten is the superior choice—and many of our patients say it’s worth the wait.
Here’s something critical: custom take-home trays from a dentist are nothing like those boil-and-bite trays from Boots.
Custom trays are made from a mould of your teeth. They fit precisely—no slippage, no uneven whitening, no bleach touching your gums. You’ll use professional-grade whitening gel (supplied by us) for 30–60 minutes daily, typically for 2–3 weeks. Results build gradually, which many people prefer.
The cost? Significantly less than in-chair whitening. But the results take longer, and they’re not as dramatic as Zoom. Still, if you want a sustained, gradual transformation—and you’re patient—take-home trays are excellent value.
Professional whitening typically ranges from £295 to £695 depending on the system and whether you’re in a major city like Manchester. Here’s what shapes the price:
We’re transparent about pricing at Kiss Dental. Our fees page breaks down exactly what you’ll pay, and we offer finance options if you want to spread the cost. No surprises.
Your teeth won’t whiten evenly if certain things are working against you. And this is critical—understanding these factors means you won’t waste money on treatments that won’t work for you.
Natural tooth shade. If your teeth are naturally very yellow or grey, they’ll whiten slower and less dramatically than naturally white teeth. Grey tones are particularly stubborn. Dr Kailesh Solanki, our founder, often recommends Enlighten for grey teeth because of its superior results.
Existing restorations. Fillings, crowns, and veneers don’t whiten. So if your front tooth is a crown, professional whitening will make your natural teeth whiter—but the crown stays the same shade. Plan accordingly.
Lifestyle staining. Coffee, red wine, smoking—they all stain your teeth actively. If you’re a five-cup-a-day person, your results will fade faster. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t whiten, just means you’ll need maintenance treatments more frequently.
Existing stains. Surface stains (from diet) whiten well. Internal stains (from medicine or age) whiten slowly. Really deep internal stains might need cosmetic bonding instead of whitening.
The honest answer? Most people. But some groups need special consideration.
Excellent candidates: healthy gums, no cavities, naturally white or yellow teeth, no existing crown work.
Good candidates: if you have existing fillings or crowns, we can still whiten your natural teeth (they’ll look brighter next to the unchanged restoration—which can look odd, so we discuss this first).
Not suitable yet: active tooth decay, gum disease, very worn enamel. We’ll treat these first—there’s no point whitening teeth that aren’t healthy. Pregnant or breastfeeding? We recommend waiting.
Teeth whitening and sensitivity. Everyone asks about it. And yes, some sensitivity during or after treatment is normal—but it’s usually manageable, and it fades.
Here’s why it happens: the whitening gel temporarily opens microscopic channels in your enamel. Cold water hits your dentine and—zing—you feel it. But it passes.
We manage sensitivity actively:
Most sensitivity disappears within 24–48 hours. Don’t avoid whitening because you’re worried about sensitivity. Tell us if you’ve got sensitive teeth beforehand, and we’ll manage it.
Professional whitening results last 3–5 years if you’re careful. Some people get five years. Some people’s teeth start dulling after eight months. The variation depends on lifestyle, diet, and your natural tooth colour.
Coffee drinkers? Expect results to fade noticeably after 2–3 years. Non-smokers who avoid red wine and coffee? You might stretch it to 5 years.
The good news: maintenance is cheap and easy. A quick top-up treatment every 12–18 months keeps your smile bright without the full cost of an initial treatment.
“Whitening damages your teeth.” Professional whitening, applied by dentists, doesn’t damage enamel. Your teeth stay structurally intact.
“If you whiten, your teeth will look fake.” Nope. Professional whitening looks natural because we control the shade. We’re not aiming for blinding white—we aim for bright, healthy-looking white.
“Once you whiten, you have to keep whitening forever.” You don’t have to do anything. If you’re happy with slightly less bright teeth, you can stop. But if you want to maintain the brightness, occasional touch-ups help.
“All whitening systems are the same.” Absolutely not. Zoom, Enlighten, and supermarket kits use completely different technology and concentrations. Results vary massively. Our professional whitening page explains the systems we use.
We’re based in Manchester City Centre, but we also serve Altrincham, Flixton, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Liverpool, Bury, and Bramhall. Dr Khushal Morar leads our cosmetic work—he’s done hundreds of whitening treatments and genuinely cares about the details. And Dr Kailesh Solanki, our founder, oversees our approach to patient care and clinical excellence.
You’re not a number here. We’ll discuss your natural tooth colour, your lifestyle, and your expectations before we start. If whitening’s not the best solution, we’ll say so—and suggest alternatives like cosmetic bonding or veneers.
Zoom takes 45 minutes. Enlighten’s in-chair component takes about an hour, though the full course includes take-home trays over 1–2 weeks.
Not during treatment—the bracket areas won’t whiten. Wait until the braces come off, then whiten.
Tetracycline stains are internal and deep. Professional whitening helps, but results are modest. Cosmetic bonding or veneers often work better for tetracycline staining.
We recommend waiting. There’s no evidence professional whitening is harmful, but pregnancy isn’t the time to introduce any new treatments if you can avoid it.
For 48 hours: avoid dark beverages (coffee, tea, red wine), dark foods (soy sauce, berries, tomato sauce), smoking, and vigorous brushing. Stick to white foods and mild temperatures.
Yes. Tell us beforehand, and we’ll use sensitivity management protocols. Most sensitive teeth can handle professional whitening.
Our fees page shows current pricing. Zoom typically costs £395–£495. Enlighten typically costs £495–£695. We also offer finance options if you’d like to spread the cost.
