If you’ve been missing teeth for years, you’ve probably heard about dental implants. They’re a game-winning solution for tooth loss—but the traditional process can take months. What if we told you there’s a faster way?
At Kiss Dental, we offer same-day dental implants across our practices in Manchester City Centre, Altrincham, Flixton, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Liverpool, Bury, and Bramhall. Dr Kailesh Solanki and Dr Khushal Morar have perfected this technique to give our patients teeth they can smile with on the same day they walk into our surgery.
But here’s the thing—not everyone is suitable for same-day implants. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what they are, who makes a good candidate, and whether they’re right for you.
Same-day dental implants (also called immediate load implants or teeth-in-a-day) are exactly what they sound like. Rather than waiting six months for your implant to integrate with your jawbone before adding a crown, you leave our surgery with a functional tooth the very same day.
The process works like this: we place the implant fixture into your jawbone, and whilst the bone is integrating, we attach a temporary crown. This temporary restoration lets you eat, speak, and smile naturally—straight away. Once your jaw has fully healed (usually after three to six months), we replace the temporary crown with a permanent one.
It’s a brilliant solution if you can’t face months without a tooth, or if you’re planning a special event and want to look your best.
To help you understand the difference, here’s how the two approaches compare:
| Factor | Traditional Implants | Same-Day Implants |
|---|---|---|
| Time to functional tooth | 6–12 months | Same day |
| Number of appointments | 3–4 appointments | 1–2 appointments |
| Initial cost | £2,000–£3,000 | £2,500–£3,500 |
| Temporary tooth needed | Yes (flipper or temporary crown) | No (permanent temporary crown) |
| Candidate requirements | Standard criteria | Stricter (bone density, health) |
| Osseointegration period | 3–6 months before loading | Can load immediately |
As you can see, the main advantage of same-day implants is speed and convenience. But they’re not right for everyone, and we’ll explain why in a moment.
For same-day implants to work, several factors need to align. Here’s what makes someone a good candidate:
Your jawbone needs to be dense enough to hold the implant firmly. Think of it like installing a screw into a wall—if the wall is crumbly plaster, it won’t grip. We assess this using 3D imaging scans. If you’ve had a missing tooth for a long time, your bone may have resorbed (shrunk), which can make you unsuitable. This is one reason we sometimes recommend bone grafting first.
Your body needs to heal well after implant placement. If you have uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or other serious health conditions, same-day implants might not be advisable. We’ll review your medical history thoroughly during your consultation.
Smoking impairs healing and reduces implant success rates. If you’re a regular smoker, we may recommend you quit—at least in the lead-up to treatment and during the healing phase. Light social smokers sometimes qualify, but heavy smokers typically aren’t suitable.
Your implant is only as successful as your daily care. You need to be committed to brushing, flossing, and attending regular check-ups. If you’ve neglected your teeth in the past, we’ll want to see that you’re ready to change that.
Same-day implants are brilliant, but they’re not magic. The temporary crown won’t be as strong as the permanent one. You’ll need to avoid very hard or sticky foods initially. If you understand and accept these temporary limitations, you’re on the right track.
We want to be honest about this because rushing into an unsuitable procedure can end in disappointment or failure. Here’s when same-day implants aren’t recommended:
If your jawbone is too thin or short, the implant won’t have enough support. This is common if you’ve had missing teeth for many years. In these cases, you may need a bone graft first, which extends your timeline. We can discuss our dental implants options and alternative approaches during a consultation.
Diabetes affects how your body heals. If your blood sugar isn’t well managed, implant failure rates increase significantly. If you have diabetes, we’ll ask about your HbA1c levels and may recommend you speak with your GP before proceeding.
Smoking restricts blood flow and weakens your immune response. For heavy smokers (more than 10 cigarettes a day), same-day implants are typically not suitable. We may suggest either quitting first or exploring traditional implants, which have slightly better outcomes in smokers.
If you have untreated gum disease, we’ll need to sort that first. Your gums need to be healthy for the implant to integrate properly. It’s straightforward to address—we just need to get there first.
Some medications (particularly bisphosphonates for bone conditions) can affect implant healing. If you’re on long-term medications, mention them during your consultation.
We don’t place implants during pregnancy. Your body’s hormones and immune system are in flux, and it’s safer to wait until after you’ve given birth and finished breastfeeding.
If you’re a suitable candidate, here’s what to expect on the day:
Before you come in, we’ll have taken detailed 3D scans (CBCT imaging) and designed your implant virtually using special software. We’ll have planned the exact angle, depth, and position of your implant for optimal results.
You’ll be numbed with local anaesthetic. Most patients feel pressure but no pain during the procedure.
If you still have a decayed tooth in the position, it’ll be gently extracted. Sometimes we can place the implant at the same visit; sometimes we need to wait a few days for the socket to settle. This is discussed during your consultation.
We’ll create a small opening in your jawbone and insert the titanium implant fixture. Modern drills are incredibly precise—we use computer-guided systems to ensure accuracy. This usually takes 15–30 minutes.
Once the implant is secure, we’ll attach your temporary crown. It’s colour-matched to your natural teeth and fitted to your bite. You’ll walk out looking like nothing’s changed.
Over the next three to six months, your bone integrates with the implant (called osseointegration). You’ll attend a follow-up appointment at two weeks, then periodically to monitor progress.
Once healing is complete, we’ll remove the temporary crown and fit your permanent one. This is custom-made to blend seamlessly with your adjacent teeth.
Same-day implants mean you don’t have to wait, but you do need to look after yourself properly:
Expect some swelling and mild discomfort—this is normal. We’ll prescribe pain relief and antibiotics to keep infection at bay. Stick to soft foods (soup, yoghurt, mashed potato) for the first week. Avoid very hot foods and drinks immediately after treatment.
You can rinse gently with salt water after 24 hours. Don’t brush or floss around the implant for the first week. After that, be gentle but thorough. Keeping the area clean is vital for success.
Avoid strenuous exercise for the first few days. Increased blood pressure can cause bleeding and swelling. You can usually return to normal activities within a week, but listen to your body.
For the first month, avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods. Don’t chew directly on the implant side if possible. As healing progresses, you’ll be able to eat more normally.
Avoid both if you can. They impair healing. If you must drink, keep it light and wait at least 48 hours.
After healing is complete, treat your implant like a natural tooth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and attend your regular check-ups. Implants don’t get cavities, but they can develop gum disease if neglected—and that’s the main reason implants fail.
Let’s talk money. Here’s what you can expect:
Single Same-Day Dental Implant: £2,500–£3,500
This includes the implant fixture, temporary crown, and placement procedure. The price varies depending on the complexity—a straightforward implant in the front costs less than a back molar, where more bone work might be needed.
Permanent Crown (After Osseointegration): Additional cost applies
The final permanent crown is usually £800–£1,500, depending on whether you choose a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown or an all-ceramic one.
If You Need Bone Grafting: Additional £1,000–£2,500
Not everyone needs this, but if your bone is thin, it may be necessary. We’ll discuss costs and options fully during your consultation.
For Multiple Teeth or Full Mouth: All-on-4 Options Available
If you’re missing multiple teeth or a whole arch, we offer All-on-4 implants, which can range from £6,000–£25,000+. This gives you a full set of teeth on just four implants. It’s a major advantage for people with extensive tooth loss.
We offer flexible finance options to spread the cost. View our full fee schedule or contact us to discuss pricing for your specific situation.
Let’s be balanced here. Same-day implants are brilliant—but they’re not perfect for everyone.
The actual placement usually takes 30–60 minutes, depending on complexity. Once you’re numbed and prepped, the implant itself goes in quickly. Adding the temporary crown takes another 20–30 minutes. You’re looking at around two hours total in the surgery, though you’ll spend some of that time waiting for anaesthetic to take effect.
Yes. We colour-match it to your natural teeth and shape it to look exactly like a real tooth. Your friends won’t know it’s temporary. The only difference you might notice is how you feel—you’ll know it’s temporary, and you might be a bit self-conscious while eating. That’s why we advise sticking to softer foods initially.
No. The implant itself is mechanically stable (which is why you can use it immediately), but biological healing takes time. Over the next three to six months, your bone cells integrate with the implant surface. That’s called osseointegration, and it’s important for long-term success. You can use the tooth, but you need to be careful.
We strongly advise against it. Smoking impairs healing and significantly increases failure risk. If you’re a smoker and want same-day implants, this is the time to quit—or at least take a serious break. Talk to your GP if you need support quitting.
Don’t worry. You have options. Traditional implants have excellent success rates too. Bone grafting can sometimes make same-day implants possible after a few months of healing. Or we might recommend a different solution entirely, like a dental bridge. Book a consultation with Dr Solanki or Dr Morar, and we’ll work through your options together. Get in touch today.
With proper care, dental implants last 20–30 years or even longer. Some of our patients have had implants for 15+ years without problems. They’re basically a one-time investment. The crown (temporary and permanent) may need replacing after 10–15 years, but the implant itself tends to be rock-solid if you look after it.
Implant failure is rare (around 1–2% failure rate), but it happens. If it does, we’ll remove it and can usually place a new one after a healing period. We stand behind our work and will discuss aftercare support when you’re here.
Not usually. Many patients return to light work the next day. If your job involves heavy lifting, intense exercise, or very public-facing work (and you’re self-conscious about swelling), you might take a day or two off. Most people just need the day of treatment plus one day to recover.
Sometimes. Back teeth experience more biting force, so we need to be certain your bone is dense enough. In some cases, we’ll recommend the traditional approach for back molars, or sometimes a phased approach where we place the implant but use a removable temporary restoration while it heals. Dr Solanki and Dr Morar will assess this during your consultation.
Once fully healed, most patients report their implant feels completely normal. You might notice a slight difference in sensation—implants don’t have the same nerve endings as natural tooth roots—but functionally, they’re indistinguishable. You’ll chew, smile, and eat just like you did before tooth loss.
We’ve been placing same-day implants for years now. Dr Kailesh Solanki, our founder, and Dr Khushal Morar bring years of implant experience to every case. We invest in the latest technology—computer-guided implant systems, 3D imaging, and precision planning software—to give you the best possible outcome.
But we’re not just about technology. We take time to understand your goals, answer your questions, and make sure you feel confident about your decision. If you’re not suitable for same-day implants, we’ll tell you honestly and discuss alternatives. Our team spans across our practices in Manchester City Centre, Altrincham, Flixton, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Liverpool, Bury, and Bramhall.
The best way to find out if you’re a candidate is to book a consultation. We’ll take scans, review your health history, and explain your options without pressure. There’s no obligation—we just want to help you understand what’s possible.
