What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is essentially a cap that covers the entire visible part of your tooth. Think of it as a protective shell that sits over your natural tooth structure. Crowns are primarily restorative—meaning they’re designed to strengthen and protect a tooth that’s been damaged, decayed, or weakened.

When we place a crown, we need to remove a significant amount of tooth structure to make room for it. Your natural tooth is shaped down, and then a custom-made crown (the same colour and shape as your natural teeth) is cemented over the top. The crown takes on all the biting and chewing forces that your tooth would normally handle.

Crowns are particularly useful if you’ve had:

• Root canal treatment
• A large filling that’s failed or broken down
• A tooth that’s cracked, chipped, or severely decayed
• A tooth that’s undergone significant trauma

They’re also used for cosmetic reasons when a tooth is severely discoloured or misshapen, though this is less common since veneers are often a better cosmetic choice.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover only the front surface of your teeth. Rather than capping the entire tooth like a crown does, a veneer is bonded to the outer layer of your natural tooth. They’re essentially a cosmetic upgrade—designed to make your teeth look better, not to restore them.

Veneers are perfect if you want to change the appearance of your smile without losing tooth structure. They can cover stains that won’t respond to whitening, close small gaps between teeth, reshape teeth that look too small or oddly proportioned, or lengthen teeth that have worn down over time.

Because veneers only cover the front surface, we don’t need to remove as much of your natural tooth. In most cases, we’ll prepare the tooth by removing just a thin layer of enamel—about half a millimetre—to make room for the veneer.

Structural vs Cosmetic: The Key Difference

Here’s the fundamental distinction: crowns are structural, veneers are cosmetic.

A crown does the work. It strengthens a weakened tooth, protects it from further damage, and can handle all the forces of biting and chewing. If your tooth is damaged or decayed, a crown is often the only option that will keep that tooth functional for years to come.

A veneer does the showing. It transforms how your tooth looks without necessarily adding structural support. If your tooth is healthy but you don’t like how it appears, a veneer is an excellent choice.

Tooth Preparation: How Much Do We Need to Remove?

One of the biggest differences between crowns and veneers comes down to tooth preparation—how much of your natural tooth we need to remove or modify.

Crown Preparation: We’ll remove approximately 1.5–2mm of tooth structure from all sides (top, front, and back). This means we’re changing the shape of your entire tooth to make room for the crown to fit properly. Because we’re removing so much structure, a crown provides a lot of support and protection to the remaining tooth underneath.

Veneer Preparation: We’ll remove roughly 0.3–0.5mm of enamel from the front surface only. This is minimal preparation—barely noticeable. Your tooth remains largely intact, and the veneer simply sits on top, bonded with a special adhesive.

Why does this matter? Well, if your tooth is already healthy and structurally sound, removing 1.5–2mm for a crown seems wasteful. But if your tooth is weakened or damaged, that extra support from a crown becomes essential. This is why your dentist’s assessment is so important—and why we always explain our recommendations before going ahead with treatment.

How Long Will They Last?

Both crowns and veneers are long-term investments in your smile, but their longevity differs slightly.

Crowns: A well-maintained crown typically lasts 10–15 years, sometimes longer. We’ve seen crowns last 20+ years with excellent care. The lifespan depends on the material used (we’ll come back to that), how well you look after it, and the forces placed on it during chewing and grinding.

Veneers: Porcelain veneers usually last 7–15 years. They’re incredibly durable, but because they’re bonded to the front surface of your tooth rather than capping the entire tooth, they can eventually chip or the bond can weaken. Composite veneers (made of tooth-coloured resin) last slightly shorter—typically 5–7 years—because the material is softer than porcelain.

The main factor affecting longevity? How you treat them. Whether you’ve got a crown or a veneer, avoid chewing ice or hard sweets, don’t use your teeth to open things, and keep up with your oral hygiene and regular check-ups.

Let’s talk money. Veneers are typically more expensive than crowns on a per-tooth basis, though this varies depending on the specific treatment you need.

Choose a crown if:

Can You Use Both Crowns and Veneers?

Absolutely. In fact, we often recommend combination treatments for patients who want optimal results. You might have a crown on a back tooth that’s been through root canal treatment, while having veneers on your front teeth for cosmetic improvement. Or you might have veneers on your top front teeth and a crown on a side tooth that’s been damaged.

What About Other Cosmetic Options?

The Treatment Process: What to Expect

Crown Treatment: This typically requires two appointments. In the first appointment, we prepare your tooth, take impressions, and place a temporary crown. In the second appointment (usually 1–2 weeks later), we remove the temporary crown and cement your permanent crown in place. Some modern dental practices can now create crowns on the same day using digital technology, though traditional crowns often provide a better fit and aesthetic result.

Veneer Treatment: Veneer placement usually takes one or two appointments, depending on whether we’re using traditional laboratory-made veneers or newer same-day options. With traditional veneers, we prepare your teeth, take impressions, place temporaries, and then bond the permanent veneers about a week later. With newer technologies, the entire process can sometimes be completed in a single visit.

Caring for Your New Smile

Once you’ve invested in crowns or veneers, you’ll want to keep them looking perfect. Here’s what we recommend:

• Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
• Floss daily to keep the area where your crown or veneer meets your natural tooth clean
• Avoid hard or sticky foods that could damage your restoration
• Don’t use your teeth as tools to open packages or bite off things
• Protect your smile if you grind your teeth at night by wearing a night guard
• Come for regular check-ups at least twice a year so we can monitor your restorations

Frequently Asked Questions

Do crowns and veneers feel like real teeth?

Yes, both should feel completely natural once you’ve adapted to them. The first few days might feel slightly different as your mouth adjusts, but after a week or two, you’ll forget they’re there. Modern crowns and veneers are made to match the shape and bite of your natural teeth perfectly.

Will a crown or veneer stain?

Porcelain crowns and veneers are highly stain-resistant because porcelain doesn’t absorb liquids the way natural tooth enamel does. However, if you have veneers, the edges where the veneer meets your natural tooth can stain if you drink a lot of coffee, red wine, or tea. Composite resin veneers stain more easily than porcelain. Regular cleaning and good oral hygiene help prevent this.

Can you whiten a crown or veneer?

No—crowns and veneers don’t respond to teeth whitening treatments. This is actually important to know before you get either one. If you’re planning whitening treatment, we usually recommend doing that first, then matching your crown or veneer to your newly whitened teeth. This ensures your restoration matches your natural teeth colour perfectly.

What happens if a crown or veneer breaks?

If a crown becomes loose or breaks, the tooth underneath is exposed and vulnerable, so we’ll usually need to replace it fairly quickly. If a veneer chips or bonds breaks, we can usually repair it or replace just that veneer without affecting the others. Either way, contact us as soon as you notice a problem so we can assess the damage and discuss your options.

Are crowns and veneers covered by dental insurance?

Most dental insurance plans cover crowns when they’re deemed medically necessary (for a damaged or decayed tooth requiring root canal treatment). Veneers are typically considered cosmetic and aren’t covered, though you might get partial coverage if your veneer is replacing a tooth that would otherwise need a crown.
